If this isn’t cause for celebration, I don’t know what is. For the first time in recent memory, today I finished my entire “to-do” list. By 5pm! And for those who know me (in particular Lauren) that is really saying something. That’s not because I’m a person who never gets things done, it’s more that I’m a person whose task appetite is bigger than her stomach. That and as project/client manager for our small firm, my days are generally some combination of dozens of small tasks planned for accomplishment and total chaos brought on by the ringing phone. Funnily enough, after a particularly trying Friday last week I have spent most of this weekend dreading today. My task list had — no word of a lie — 28 separate items on it, and one of those was “help launch major e-commerce site.” But it’s only moments after 5pm and I’m done everything. And it all happened with a fair bit of ease. I’m actually feeling superstitious about posting this for fear of karmic retribution, but I figure I’m ready to take the risk.
Coincidentally, I was at a blessing ceremony for a dear friend who is to have a baby soon, and each of us was asked to bring “something we wanted to let go of to make room for new things.” We wrote these down on pieces of paper and burned them as a part of the blessing. Mine was “busyness”. Only one letter away from “business” and yet oh so different. As Lauren and I talk with friends and colleagues about our book project, or about how our company is doing, we generally only have “good” things to say. Yes, we’re busy. Yep, lots of excellent clients to work with. And yes, the path to publishing is progressing well. Still, I fear that we often answer those questions with a bit of a sigh, as while things are technically “going well”, we tend to be too flippin’ busy to really enjoy them. Things are often far more frantic than we’d like, and while we always get things done, I can’t remember the last time I had space for reflection.
Today didn’t really offer much time for reflection either, but I can see an end in sight. All 28 items are crossed off the list (plus a few more that popped on there today), and the rest of the week looks reasonable. Maybe there’s something to these rituals afterall. Hopefully some new found breathing room will help me to also find some more time to post here. I’ve got two excellent business profiles waiting for posting (both of which are on this week’s to do list) and plenty of other thoughts running around my head. Plus we’ve done some media hits lately (both web and print based) which we’ll post about as they become available.
