Two really excellent posts over at Blogher about PepsiCo’s move to hire its first female CEO. Both are well worth reading, and each has a slightly different take on the situation:
- First, Karne Walrond’s: PepsiCo names Indra Nooyi its first female CEO — and gives me hope for the corporate world at large.
- Then, Jory Des Jardin weighs in with: News Alert: Women are capable of Leading Companies … now back to work
Both women make excellent points grounded in very real experience in the corporate world, which I’m happy to say I’m a bit of a armchair observer to having spent most of my “career” life being self-employed now. Which may be why I particularly liked this quote of Jory’s:
I don’t feel excited that a woman has broken through the ranks of a predominantly male paradigm because, quite honestly, I don’t respect the paradigm. I respect the intelligence and talent it takes to survive in the paradigm, but not the paradigm itself.

And Disney just promoted from within today - a female President for WDW Parks & Resorts! Maybe we are making progress :-)

I volunteer for an organization called Impact, which is a post secondary student run organization that promotes entrepreneurship, leadership and innovation. Although I have graduated from university, I am still very much involved.
One of my responsibilities is to research and invite women like Indra Nooyi to come speak at our events such as the leadership conference. When I read about Indra, I was so inspired. Here is an ethnic woman who was not born in Canada, and was promoted to CEO. It shows that all of those obstacles we face can be broken down. Here is a quote by her that I love. “Being a woman, being foreign-born, you’ve got to be smarter than anyone else”. If Indra decides to come speak at one of our events, everyone on the Impact team, including myself would be extremely honoured!
