It’s been quiet here of late, due of course to a flurry of activity at the office. I hate to abandon our readers, though, even in a work crunch. So here are a few bits and bobs that have caught my admittedly divided attention of late:
- The sale of Robeez footwear: This woman-owned (and for the most part, operated), B.C.-based company has been sold for $30.5 million — not exactly chump change. Founder Sandra Wilson has built quite the baby-shoe empire, and the news media has gloried in recounting the humble beginnings of the now market leader. I must say that between Robeez and Flickr, it seems women entrepreneurs in British Columbia are making quite a splash of late — and although these kinds of company sales are for the most part outside our area of interest, it’s nice to see some of the successes in this area happening to our homegirls.
- Also noticed at the Globe is their new(ish) small business section, which I’ve added to my RSS feeds — at first blush it looks like they might actually get it! I’m excited to see a Canadian publication grasp what small business owners actually care about: not just business tips, but stories about how other entrepreneurs are creating successful ventures with an eye to sustainability and balance.
- An oldie (sorta) but goodie crossed my radar again this week and I wanted to share it with y’all: How do you manage: Not growing, and happy about it discusses the phenomenon of small business owners staying small to keep their businesses manageable. It’s great to see some attention being paid to those of us who like our businesses to flourish, yes, but not take over our entire lives.
